Having your period can take its toll not only on your self-esteem but also on your physical appearance. Between the breakouts, blotches and bloat, it’s surprising many of us have the energy to agree to a romantic date, let alone show up for one! Don’t leave your date hanging this V-Day and tackle beauty emergencies head on with our fool-proof guide below.
The Problem: Oily Hair
The Solution: You left the house with clean, voluminous hair, but by the time dessert was served your locks turned into a limp, greasy mess. You’ve got two options here; pack some dry shampoo in your clutch, which you can quickly spray onto your roots during a bathroom break. If that’s not an option then dab a hand wipe (readily available at most restaurants), onto your oily roots. The alcohol in the wipes dry up hair follicles, minimising oiliness.
The Problem: Break Outs
The Solution: The sun is shining, the birds are tweeting, you jump out of bed, excited for your date tonight until…. you notice the giant pimple that’s reared its head on your chin. Restrain yourself from squeezing and take action. Soothe swelling by applying ice to the pimple for a few minutes. Next attack it with a treatment that contains salicylic acid, benzoyl peroxide or zinc oxide. Once your treatment has absorbed, gently pat some concealer onto your zit and blend in. Set with translucent powder.
The Problem: Water Retention
The Solution: No one wants to look or feel like the Michelin Man while on a hot date. Lying on your back with your feet raised will not only decrease swollen ankles but by applying some chilled cotton balls or cucumber slices onto your eyes, you’ll combat puffy peepers. If your stomach is acting up then stay hydrated to drain your body of any bloat-causing toxins. Also steer clear of refined sugars and carbohydrates as these often aggravate bloat.
The Problem: Hair Down There.
The Solution: You’re on your period but agreed to a beach day with your dream date. You’ve got your tampons sorted, thanks to the new Tampax Compak, which give you the freedom to live life to the fullest, but you’re rather unkempt ‘down there.’ Booking an appointment at your beautician may seem like a good idea but consider these points; your wax will hurt more than usual as sensitivity is at an all time high during menstruation. Pop a painkiller or two before your appointment to lessen pain. Be considerate and ensure you wash up before your appointment and tuck your tampon string away to avoid any embarrassing incidents.
The Problem: Washed Out
The Solution: Our sleep patterns are often disrupted during menstruation, whether it be from cramps, night sweats or chills. Whatever the reason, many of us wake up looking worn out. Add some colour to your complexion by lightly dusting a bronzer/blush duo, onto your cheekbones, sides of the nose and forehead. You’ll have everyone fooled in no time.
The Problem: Blotchy Skin
The Solution: Blushing can be sweet, especially when you receive a compliment from your crush, but blotchy, red skin is definite no-no. An uneven skin tone is usually a side effect to hypersensitivity of the skin, which is common during menstruation. Prep your skin before a big date by applying a green based primer. The green in the formula will counteract any redness and leave you looking cool as a cucumber, even if you’re not.
