A Cult Classic: Kiehls Original Musk Fragrance
Cool scents come and go, but there’s something special about this one. Like most other iconic fragrances (think Chanel No. 5, YSL Opium and Dior Poison), it’s feminine yet sophisticated and has captured the imaginations of thousands of women since making its debut back in 1851 – including Spanish model Eugenia Silva; fashion designer Gail Elliot, and actresses Kyra Sedgwick, Charlize Theron and Julianne Moore.
The backstory goes a little something like this: In 1851 Kiehl’s pharmacy developed their first version of the perfume and labelled it “Love Oil”- a nod to its fragrant sensuality. Too provocative for some, the potent concoction was only released in 1963 as an Eau de Toilette after being rediscovered in the apothecary’s vat in 1950. Dubbed ‘the modern version of an original scent’ and recognisable by its distinctively bold brown and gold bottle, Kiehl’s Original Musk had arrived.
Despite its title, the fragrance isn’t all about musk. Upon application you’ll notice more delicate hints of sweet orange blossom, ylang-ylang, rose, neroli and white patchouli. It’s a uniquely floral scent balanced with sensual depth – a killer combo that makes it stand out from its younger counterparts and continue to attract women of all ages and stages.
