Is grey the new blonde?

#GrannyHair is right on trend. Here’s how to achieve silver fox locks with minimal stress to your tresses…

Gone are the days of grey hair signalling a beauty disaster.

Thanks to Jean Paul Gaultier’s catwalk look and the silver fox tresses spotted on it-girls Rihanna and Kylie Jenner, it’s official: #GrannyHair has fled the old age home, overtaken our Instagram feeds, and is making headlines on international runways and red carpets.

To clarify, we’re not advocating having you join the blue rinse brigade, or encouraging you to cancel your next colour wash or commit to going au naturel back to your roots. The new grey is all about sophistication. For older women, embracing grey is a graceful approach to aging, while for the younger set – and here’s the kicker – when done right, it’s a novel beauty trick that can actually make you look younger.

Yes BB’s, far from encouraging you to pay good money to look OLD, contrasting luscious silvery locks with a fresh, youthful face, will turn heads by emphasising your best features.

MAINTAINING YOUR MANE ATTRACTION

We spoke to freelance stylist and hair guru Fiona Waddell for tips to keep grey locks looking luscious for longer…

BEFORE THE TREATMENT

“Use a high performance treatment at least 3 times before the process. This will reconstruct , rebuild , hydrate and restore extra elasticity to hair before the process,” says Fiona.

Fiona recommends: Joico K-Pak Deep Penetrating Reconstructor (R 355; The Test Box)

AFTER THE TREATMENT

1. Alternate between a silver shampoo and a reconstructor shampoo

Silver shampoo is purple in colour and functions like a toner to reduce yellow tones.

Fiona recommends: Paul Mitchell Platinum Blonde Shampoo (R 620 for 1 litre; The Test Box)

“If you use silver shampoo too often, it might turn hair ashy,” warns Fiona, “That’s why I suggest using a reconstructor shampoo every alternate wash.”

Fiona recommends: Joico K-Pak Shampoo (R 250; The Test Box)

2. Use a reconstructor hydrating treatment once a week

To minimise breakage, use a hydrating treatment to replenish moisture lost in the colouring process.

3. Touch up your roots
Visit the salon every six to eight weeks to keep your grey hair colour consistent, unless you’re going for an ombré look.
