Makeup Brushes

Someone once said you are only as good as the tools you use… I’m not too sure who that someone is but they couldn’t have spoken truer words when it comes to a makeup artists tools. Like any handyman, artist, baker, hairdresser, seamstress, photographer we rely on our tools to get us the results we require. And as important as a hammer is to a handyman and a hairdryer to a hairdresser so are makeup brushes to a makeup artist.

Buying new makeup brushes can be a daunting task, so many different designs, shapes, brands and numerous packaging to choose from. When buying new brushes you need to keep some things in mind, never try and save, the better quality brushes you buy the longer the life span of them will be. High quality brushes made out of natural hairs such as sable and pony hair will act as an investment, if you treat your brushes right you can have them for many years. Synthetics such as nylon can be used but only for eyebrow brushes and mascara wands as they are meant to be stiff but this is the only thing they should be purchased for.

Looking after your brushes is essential not only does it eliminate the bacteria on your brushes but it gets rid of the build up. If you use your brushes everyday it is suggested that you should clean them at least every two weeks.

Here is a simple method on how to clean and care for your brushes:

1.Fill up a cup with 4 parts water and 1 part baby shampoo ( I recommend Johnson and Johnson’s) mix the mixture in by gently stirring it
2.Take your brushes and one by one swirl them around in the mixture, always remember to be gentle as you are dealing with natural   hairs
3.Take a soft tissue and blot the excess dirt on to it , repeating until the brush is clean
4.Once done rinse the brush with water and mould the hairs back in to their previous shape (if not moulded properly the brushes will dry in the wrong shape ruining the brush)
5.Place the moulded brushes on a piece of cloth or roller towel and allow to dry

Remember to treat your brushes as you would your own hair and they can last you up to a lifetime providing the perfect tool for application and blending. A makeup artist’s best friend!
