A red lip looks different on different people, the trick to determining the correct shade for you is to look at your specific undertones and colouring. Basically reds can be divided into three categories: Orangey reds, true reds and deep reds.

Orangey Red Lipsticks
Orangey reds have, as the names suggests, orange undertones. These shades work best on lighter skins. If you have lighter skin-tones, a more coral or orange-based red is your best option. Try Maybelline Color Sensational Lipstick in Sweet Nectar or MAC Lady Danger.

True Red Lipsticks
Women with more medium tones can wear get away with wearing most shades of red, however, true, or bright, reds tend to work best with this type of skin tone.

MAC Russian Red is a firm favourite with Hollywood’s finest. Orange-reds are also an option here as the colour pops against a medium skin tone, especially when worn with bronzer.

Deep Red Lipsticks
Darker-skinned women should lean toward deeper, burgundy red tones. These purple-based reds are flattering with dark skin as the plum undertones make the lip look regal and sexy. Try Givenchy Rogue Interdit Lipstick or Guerlain KissKiss Strass in Rouge Imperial.

Because red is a color that bleeds, be sure to line lips with either a matching or nude lip liner to prevent colour transfer. Apply lips gloss to the middle of the lower lip, then rub lips together to spread the gloss to get just the right amount of shine without looking goopy. Lip gloss makes your lips look more full, if you already have very full lips, use gloss sparingly. Wear your red lipstick with confidence, and don’t forget to show off your beauty and smile!
