La Brasiliana – Hair Tips

Frizzy hairstyles driving you crazy ? Want that sleek, silky look ?
Say goodbye to problem frizz and unmanageable curls ! Say hello to La Brasiliana Keratin treatment with collagen.

WHAT IS IT
A revolutionary Keratin-based treatment that transforms uncontrollable or badly conditioned hair and replenishes the condition of the hair without any damage to the molecular structure.

The treatment is NOT a straightener, but a process which will leave your hair more manageable.

Keratin is the primary protein of the hair, skin, and nails. This natural substance gives hair the ability to return to its original healthy, shiny, smooth state while collagen improves the elasticity of the hair. Keratin treatments to smooth the hair began in rural Brazil more than 10 years ago.  It was discovered that certain preservatives seemed to cross link / bind keratin proteins to the hair shaft, resulting in frizz-free hair that lasted for months.

The treatment can be used on all hair types, even chemically-treated, coloured, permed, relaxed, straightened, highlighted, and bleached hair.

The application process takes anywhere from 1.5 to 4 hours depending on the length and thickness of the hair. After application of the product, it is infused with a 450 degree flat iron, which seals in moisture, hydrates the hair, and creates a glossy finish. Results are visible immediately after treatment is completed.

Management of hair after La-Brasiliana Keratin Treatment with Collagen is effortless. The amount of time required to style hair will decrease dramatically. Humidity, rain, or perspiration will no longer affect the hairstyle. The promise – no more frizzy hair!

Results last two to four months  – the treatment dissipates gradually as hair is shampooed. As clients repeat the treatment every two to four months, they will be able to observe a continuous improvement of their hair.

THE FACTS

  • Not all Brazilian treatments are created equal.
  • Keratin is the protein found naturally in human hair, skin and nails.
  • Keratin can rebuild the condition of the hair shaft, for coarse, brittle or fragile hair.
  • Collagen improves the elasticity of the hair.
  • Keratin can be applied to the hair, and sealed into the shaft with the heat of a flat iron
  • The treatment takes between 1 and 3 hours, depending on the length and coarseness of the hair – some stylists double up to expedite the process.
  • The treatment is NOT a straightener, and so will not leave you without body.  You will be able to wear it straight or naturally (controlled) curly.
  • All ethnicities can be treated.  It is most appreciated by hair that is over dyed or relaxed.
  • Can last up to 4 months, with no un-natural hair re-growth.  The length of time it lasts is dependent on the clients’ home care regime.
  • The price is hair length and density dependent.  From R320 – R2400.
  • The treatment fades over time with normal shampooing.  Try to extend the life of your treatment by using the aftercare products recommended.  It must be free of sodium, and made to extend the result of your La Brasiliana treatment.  Please note that La Brasiliana home care products can be used for hair that has not had the treatment as well, to great effect.
  • The treatment is repeated (not sooner than 3 month intervals – due to protein overload), and will continually improve the hair.

TECHNICAL INFORMATION
When the cuticle of the hair shaft is open, the protein (keratin) can be introduced, together with formalin (Methylene glycol).  Formalin is needed to bind and preserve the keratin on the cuticle, and makes it long lasting. The cuticle is then sealed by flat ironing the hair at 230 degrees Celsius / 450 degrees Fahrenheit.

During ironing, formalin loses its water molecule, and a gas, formaldehyde, is emitted. Formaldehyde is at the centre of the debate and controversy about Brazilian treatments. The dangers, if any, are to the stylist who is exposed several times daily.  If you’re concerned about sensitivity to formaldehyde, you should wear a paper face mask during treatment.

Formalin is incompatible with Sodium Chloride, Hydrogen Peroxide, salt and ammonia, so all hair colouring must be done BEFORE using the keratin treatment with collagen.

If you would prefer no formalin exposure at all, La Brasiliana can offer the salon the ESCLUSO solution with zero aldehydes. Do note, though, that this keratin treatment will only last in the hair up to 6 weeks.
