50 Shades of Love: date makeup for every age

When you’re in your 20’s the world is you oyster and certainly so with makeup. As you get older and you reach your 30’s, 40’s, 50’s and 60’s you may start to feel that your makeup options are lessening. Truth is, as you get older you have to become a bit savvier on applying your makeup. You need to start using slightly better tools and better technique, but not to fear, it’s not as daunting as it may seem. I present to you your guide for fabulous makeup at ever age!

Your 20’s: In your 20’s your skin is fabulously luminous and the contours of your face are tight and smooth. Don’t hide your gorgeous skin beneath layers of heavy foundation. Seek out a foundation (for your skin type) that is light and thin and highlight your gorgeous cheekbones with illuminating liquids or shimmer powders. Your brows are at a stage when they’re still full so stick to powders to define them. Play up your eyes with shimmer shadows all the way through to mattes. There is no restriction on shadow textures now! Whether smokey sexy or winged out cat liner or even no eye makeup at all, have fun and experiment. Just remember to not overdo it. Your 20’s are a time when lip colours of any tint, tone or shade can be your friend so indulge in the richest reds, the poppiest pinks or the palest nudes.

20s

Your 30’s: By now you’ve established what sort of textures and formulas you prefer. Your skin has started to lose some elasticity (but not much). Keep your complexion fresh with a light foundation or BB Cream and stick to concealers with slightly opaque coverage that’s not too heavy. Brighten your face with poppy blush colours in pinks and corals and play up your eyes with metallic bronze shadows and gunmetal coloured liner. Keep your lashes looking luscious with volumizing and lengthening mascara. If you need to use powder, opt for silica based powders that disappear on the skin. Enhance your lips with creamy textured lipsticks in sheer formulas or simply use gloss. Whether you want to use lip liner or not, it’s all up to you.
30s

Your 40’s: Your skin starts losing some of its contours in your 40’s and is slackening a bit. You may feel you’re looking a bit shadowy around the eyes and you may have some pigmentation forming on your skin. Now is the time to look for foundations that have a smoothing and luminous effect. Your skin needs more light not more texture so keep foundation texture thin. Concealer is a product to keep and use light reflecting concealer pens to keep the shadows at bay. If your skin is dryer, you can skip the powder as long as your foundation isn’t particularly greasy looking. Eye makeup needs to be a staple of your makeup routine so use washes of colour on the lids to freshen the eyes. Your lips may start to loo thin, so pop a shimmery highlight above the cupids bow to give the illusion of fullness and stick to midtone coloured lipsticks that are a few shades brighter than your own lip colour. Layer on thin veils of cream blush on the cheeks to give a youthful glow.
40s

Your 50’s: Your brows may have thinned out since your 20’s, so keep them in check by filling them in with ashy brown shadows to even them out and make them full and youthful looking. Highlight just above the brow with a creamy textured highlight to “lift” the brow and define your eyes with chocolate brown gel liner. If you’ve over plucked your brows, try using a felt tip brow marker. As we get older, we need to use softer colours so chocolate brown and smoky greys are best. If you’ve lost the structure of your brows, try using a wax based brow pencil. Try a lip plumping gloss to create luscious lips. Define your lips where you need it using a lip pencil close to your natural lip colour. Choose lipsticks that add vibrancy to your face. When you apply the lipstick and your face comes alive, that’s the colour you want. Try corals, sheer reds and vibrant pinks.

50s
Your 60’s: You’ve lost definition around the eyes and may have been left with a slightly hooded look. Use taupe browns to cheat your crease and add definition back to the eyes. Dusky, soft matte shadows bring the sparkle back to your eyes. Avoid chalky mattes which can look aging. Use a chocolate brown pencil and wiggle it in the roots of your lashes to create fuller looking lashes and don’t forget the use an eyelash curler. The curler will “open” up your eyes. Try volumizing mascara’s and concentrate it in the roots of your lashes. Off-white kohl liner in the waterline gives your eyes a fresh look. Lipsticks in poppy, sheer reds and rich rose colours enliven the face. Try creamy and pearlised makeup textures to add fullness to the lips.
