Brush up your knowledge on how and which hair brushes to use according to your hair type.
When I received the topic for this article from the lovelies of Beauty Bulletin, I knew that it was going to take a lot of research. The reason for this is that I have never owned a brush in my life! I have curly hair, so my hair only gets combed through with a wide tooth comb when I wash and condition. But I was up for the challenge! This is what I’ve learnt…
I never knew how many things you had to consider when buying a brush! Firstly, let’s chat about bristles. You can choose between natural (boar bristles), synthetic (nylon, plastic, etc.) or metal bristles. Natural bristles work better for finer hair types as the bristles are softer and more flexible. Synthetic bristles are more suited to thicker and coarser hair types. You can also choose a brush with porcupine bristles (not real ones!). These bristles are clumped together in groups on the brush and are usually a mix of natural and synthetic bristles.
Now we’re on to the shape of the brush:
A comb is best to use when your aim is to detangle or distribute product through wet hair. I’m currently using the Denman 3 row comb.
I am also very keen to try the Tangle Teezer. I’ve heard great things about this product. And who can resist this gorgeous pink?!
A paddle brush is a must for long, straight hair. This brush has a cushioned base which gives way when too much pressure is applied. This helps to minimize damage caused by tugging on the hair. This brush is great for detangling and it will work perfectly for you if you have hair that straightens easily. It will also give your scalp a lovely massage.
A round or barrel brush is a must-have for most hair types. A small barrel brush is ideal for someone with fine or short hair that wants to create volume close to the roots. A big barrel brush is used when blow-drying to create more volume or a curl/bend in the hair. I have had my curls blown out on occasion and this is the brush the hairdresser used. If you are aiming for big curls, a round brush with a metal barrel is best for the job as it holds heat longer and will extend the life of your curls.
If you are in a hurry and you want your hair dried quickly, whilst creating volume, a vented brush is the one for you. The vents in the brush allow for good airflow thus shortening your drying time. They come in round and paddle shapes.
The styling or half round brush is perfect for straight bobs or if you want to create a slight bend in the hair. These brushes come in various sizes and it’s best to choose smaller ones to easier style shorter hair.
If you love an up-do, a dressing brush will come in very handy. This brush is perfect if your style requires a lot of backcombing. The pointy handle also makes sectioning your hair very easy.
Now that you’ve got the right tools, you can create any hairstyle that your heart desires!
