My granny has the most amazing skin for her age – she is 95! She has never used anything fancy on her skin, but she has always been consistent in how she has looked after it. It got me to thinking about some of the tried and tested remedies which have been used over time and which really do work.
The first one that I know my gran always followed religiously was to stay out of the sun. She never believed in sun-bathing and her skin can certainly attest to that! She loved gardening, but would always wear a wide-brimmed sunhat and sunscreen whenever she was outside.
Sleep on a satin or silk pillowcase. This isn’t an old wives’ tale, ladies! Cotton absorbs moisture!! If you sleep on satin, your skin and hair won’t lose as much moisture during the night. Less wrinkles and less hair-breakage too. Cotton is rough, so hair can easily snag on it and break, if you do too much tossing and turning.
My granny always used Nivea Crème all over her body and on her face. This iconic beauty product has really been around since forever and still has a loyal following to this day.
Some women swear that this cream is exactly the same as La Mer beauty cream, just different packaging, so they use it on their faces instead of expensive beauty treatments.
I know my gran used this cream daily twice a day on her face and body and looks beautiful for her age, so who am I to argue?! If your face is very dry, try this cream at night and you will see the difference in the morning.
Drink loads of water. My gran always taught me that six glasses of water were essential for a good and clear skin.
My granny never spent money on masks for her face. She would take things from the kitchen to sort out beauty dilemmas a favourite of hers was chilled cucumber slices or cooled teabags to treat puffy eyes.
I found a great homemade face mask online which I am sure my gran would approve of and perhaps it’s even one she used!
Try This: 1 beaten egg yolk plus 1 teaspoon olive oil. Pat/spread onto skin and leave for 15 minutes. Remove with a cotton wool pad dipped in lukewarm milk. Skin will feel soft and nourished after this treatment.
The most important anti-aging secret that my grandmother has taught me, is to always wear a smile and forget about the laughter lines!
