We attended the third instalment of the sought-after Salon58 trends series on the eve of the winter solstice. Held in the Cape winelands, and hosted by local style maven Jackie Burger, the theme of this salon – NOIR – explored duality and opposition; minimalism; seduction; sophistication, and timeless elegance – “the sensuality that we forget in everyday life” translated into unisex grooming and fashion.
The highlight: A Little Black Dress fashion show, featuring designs by KlukCGDT, Drotsky, Black Coffee and Lara Klawikowski.
And the makeup? Forget that stale black-liner & red-lip duo.
Jackie explained that “sensuality and style must have a little bit of mystery”, and the runway beauty look followed suit, thanks to MAC’s fresh take on the classic evening look…
TO SUM UP:
DITCH: A classic red lip.
DO: A smouldering burgundy pout.
Embrace the dark side by welcoming a vampy burgundy lip into your life. You’ll look all the more sophisticated.
TRY IT AT HOME: MAC Lipstick in Sin (R 185; MAC stores)
DITCH: The dramatic smoky eye.
DO: The soft, minimal brown eye look.
Universally flattering chocolate brown shadow placed in the crease makes peepers pop.
TRY IT AT HOME: Catrice Absolute Nude Eyeshadow Palette (R 89.95; Dis-Chem).
DITCH: Overdone brows and chunky lashes.
DO: Impeccably groomed, yet natural-looking lashes and brows.
Luscious yet natural-looking brows and lashes are a refreshing alternative to too-perfect eyebrows and the ‘false-lash effect’.
TRY IT AT HOME: Maybelline Define-a-Lash Mascara (R 134.95; Dis-Chem) and Essence Lash and Brow Gel Mascara (R 36.95; Dis-Chem).
DITCH: The sleek black cat-eye.
DO: The muted teal flick.
To pull together a show-stopping look, return to the swinging 60s by adding a pop of colour to the classic feline flick.
TRY IT AT HOME: Inglot AMC Eyeliner Gel in 87 (R 189; Inglot stores).
FIVE MINUTES WITH SALONNIERE JACKIE BURGER
WHY SALON 58?
Style is evasive. I want to open it up so people can slow down, appreciate and engage with it, and take home what works for them.
YOUR STYLE ICONS?
Androgynous actress Tilda Swinton, supermodel Lauren Hutton and classic Hollywood star Katharine Hepburn. It’s their attitudes towards self-liberation and individuality that ties them together.
HOW DO YOU SUGGEST WE BALANCE NOVELTY & TRADITION, DRAMA & MINIMALISM?
Revisit practices that had the virtue or essence of withstanding the test of time and couple them with practices from modern times. It’s all about appreciating the fusion. Style is explorative; it’s not a philosophy of dictation.
TIMELSS STYLE STAPLES?
Fragrance is powerful because memories are always attached to it. Chanel No.5 is my signature scent. I’ve tried many things, but I always come back to it. And red lipstick is a close second. It’s the perfect finishing touch and leaves me feeling groomed.
