Gone are the days when plaits and braids were meant for doe eyed school girls on the playground. These days intricate and stylish braid hairstyles can be seen on popular shows such as Game of Thrones and even the runway. Braids were a big hit on the runway at New York Fashion week. The models of Alice + Olivia, Christian Siriano and Badgley Mischka featured intricate and fun braids. Most intricate braid hairstyles are actually quite easy to achieve, provided that you know and understand the basics of braiding. It is possible to braid layered and short hair, but you may have to adapt the braid a bit. Also styling products and hair ties can help keep your braid neater if your hair is short or layered. Here is a guide to some of the more common braids.

The basic braid
This is the regular 3 strand braid. Tie your hair into a pony tail and divide it into three. Start the braid by moving the each of the outer braids over the middle.  This is the most basic and common braid.

 The rope braid
All though it looks difficult, the rope braid is as easy as the basic braid. Simply put your hair in ponytail and divide into two equal pieces. Twist each piece in the same direction. If you have layers you may want to use some gel or wax so that your layers do not poke out of each piece. Once both have been twisted, wrap them around one another in the direction opposite to which you have twisted them. Tie it with a small elastic band and the twists should remain in place.

The fishtail braid
The fishtail braid is deceiving as it appears difficult. Although it is time consuming, the fishtail braid is actually quite easy. If you’re a beginner, it’s best to start the braid off in a ponytail and remove it once you’re done. Split your hair into two pieces. From one side, take a tiny section of hair on the outer edge and add it the second section. Do the same on the second section and repeat these steps until down the length of your hair.If you have layers you can used wax for a neat look, or you could slightly pull the braid apart for a whimsical look.

The S – braid/Wave braid
Another intricate looking braid that is easy to achieve. This works great on short hair as well normally it is used for small braids. It’s not easy to achieve on a ponytail unless you have really long hair. Take a small section of hair and do a basic braid. Once you have reached the end of the braid, hold the outer pieces in one hand, the middle section in another.  Gently push the outer sections up the middle braid. Adjust the braid to ensure that it creates a uniform wave pattern that resembles a S. This braid is great for half updos.

Even if you have the clumsiest of hands it is possible to create these basic braided hairstyles. French braids, dutch braids and woven braids with 4+ strands are slightly more advanced, but by perfecting these simple braids, you can create a stunning hairstyle under 5 minutes.
