The essential everyday eye…
I got makeup artist, mom and Beauty Bulletin founder/head honcho, Lori Mauerberger, to give me the lowdown on an easy, everyday eye-makeup look.
Here it is in 6 steps…
1. PREPARE YOUR PEEPERS
“I follow a basic 3-step prepping process: cleanse, tone and moisturise, and I exfoliate once a week if I can. For a more radiant glow around the eyes, I exfoliate around the eyebrows and just outside the eye area to remove dead skin that can cause dullness. I place cucumber slices or chilled teabags over my eyes to reduce puffiness”.
TRY: Clinique’s 7 Day Scrub Cream Rinse-Off Formula (R325, at Edgars Red Square)
TIP: If you’re over 25, invest in a good eye serum. POND’S Gold Radiance Youth Reviving Eye Cream works wonders (R190 at Dis-Chem Pharmacies).
2. GET BROW KNOW-HOW
“Determine the best eyebrow shape for your face by brushing your eyebrow hairs upwards, using an old mascara brush. You might be able to avoid the tweezing process altogether by simply trimming any long, unruly strands”.
TIP: If you really need to tweeze, colour over new growth with a white creamy pencil to expose any hairs that need urgent plucking.
3. HERE’S A HINT: TINT
“I had my eyebrows tinted a while back. It’s a great little time-saver as I found filling in my brows every day quite tedious. If tinting isn’t an option, I recommend filling them in with a light shadow, and setting it with a clear brow gel”.
TRY: Eyelure Brow Palette Brow Trio or the Rimmel London Brow This Way Sculpting Kit, and Rimmel London Brow This Way Styling Gel (R145 and R78 at Clicks)
4. TIME TO PRIME
“Never underestimate the importance of priming your eyelids for a smooth, flawless foundation. I tried the Smashbox Foundation Primer (R345 at Woolworths) yesterday and loved it. You literally only need a tiny dot of product for full coverage. For a natural, everyday look, opt for a ‘paint pot’ instead of eye-shadow. I love Bobbi Brown Long-wear Cream Shadow in Shore (R320 at Bobbi Brown free-standing stores), and MAC does some great options too”.
TIP: Apply primer all over the eye area for a natural, even-toned glow. Skin that has been perfectly cleansed, toned and primed will allow cream shadows and paint pots to glide on easily.
5. WORK THOSE LASHES
“Curling your lashes with a eye-lash curler makes a big difference but you don’t have to do it everyday. There are some great mascaras out there that’ll help you create the perfect lash look you’re after. I save Lancôme Grandiose Mascara (R400 at leading retailers) for special occasions and use Maybelline Great Lash mascara (R100 at Clicks) for an everyday natural look.”
6. CONCEAL AND REVEAL
“To complete the look, I use a liquid concealer that dries matte for a natural finish. MAC’s Pro Longwear Concealer (R240 at MAC free-standing stores) is great for all day coverage”.
