Sometimes, there just isn’t time to head home from work to perk up your makeup before heading out. Maybe you ended up working later than usual; maybe you’re going to an impromptu dinner or drinks. Whatever the situation, a lady is always prepared to look fantastic! Here are a few tricks and tips I use to look my best after a long day at work (rather than tired, worn and with fading makeup, which is how I usually look after 12 hours at work).
Touch up your makeup
There isn’t any need to remove your makeup and start from scratch. A few simple touch ups can make all the world of difference to looking fresh and evening-ready, without wasting any time or having to lug your makeup bag with you. All you need are three or four products that you probably already carry in your handbag.
If you have any eye-make fallout under your eyes, swipe it away with a soft facial tissue.
Touch up under your eyes and over blemishes with your go-to concealer.
Give your eyes some sexy definition by lining your waterline (this is usually the first of my makeup to disappear during the day). Black will add definition and bring out lighter eye colours, white is great for opening up small eyes or making tired eyes look brighter, and brown is great for a soft, natural look. Find out which works best for you and keep a pencil in your handbag or desk drawer. (Tip: get a twist-up eyeliner pencil that won’t need sharpening).
Brighten up your face with a dab of colour on your cheeks. If you don’t carry a blusher compact, dab a little bit of lipstick on with a finger and blend well.
To make the transition to night-time, you want to amp up your look: either darken your eyeshadow or use a bolder lip colour.
Keep a small bottle, or even a sample or few, of a great evening fragrance in your desk and spritz onto your pulse points before you leave.
Perk up your hair.
Dry shampoo is a life saver for limp hair – especially when it’s hot and hair misbehaves at the blink of an eye. Keep a travel sized can in your desk or handbag for instantly clean and bouncy hair.
My favourite tip for transitioning from day to night is to invert my hair. If I wore it down all day, I sweep it up into a bun or braid. If I wore it up, I let it down. Putting your hair into a sock bun for work is also a great way of creating no-heat curls – by the end of the work day, when you let your hair down you should have a head full of bouncy, healthy waves with absolutely no effort!
Accessorise
This one takes a bit of preparation, but is totally worth it. During times when I know I’ll be working late but still want to go out to dinner directly afterwards, I keep one pair of big, swishy earrings in my desk, as well as a trio of bangles and scarf. Adding one or more of these simple elements can instantly perk up your outfit.
