For Japanese women, this is a longstanding daily practice, though it may appear foreign, or even unnecessary, to the Western eye.

In the same way that fertilizers will go to waste if applied to dry soil, unmoisturised skin cannot properly absorb the nutrients and active ingredients of a cream. It is essential therefore to first apply a treatment with high water content to loosen the skin’s barrier and allow nutrients to penetrate.
