Founder Max Sonnenberg, opened his second store in Durban only three years later. Within 4 years since opening, there were a number of Woolworths stores around South Africa. In just 80 years there are over 400 stores across South Africa, Africa and the Middle East.
Woolworths was the first retailer to offer employees a pension fund, medical aid and maternity leave in hopes of gaining the best professional employees.
